Draft!

Just a thought on the draft…. ANY other team, ANY other General manager and I would believe that the Lions’ talk and rumors about Calvin Johnson is just a smoke screen to drive up Johnson’s value so they could get more for a trade down. But when you’re talking about Matt Millen, anything can happen. I just don’t understand how that team could draft yet another wide receiver when they have such glaring needs in other spots - especially offensive line.

As for the Colts, I’m hoping for a linebacker or a DT. Ideally I’d like to see them package some of their compensatory picks to either move up for a solid player or trade down and collect a few more picks. Bill Polian has proven his ability to find great players in the later rounds of the draft.

Oh.. and who’s going to be the last guy sitting in the green room looking like someone just kicked his puppy? That’s always my favorite part of watching the draft.

as if to prove me right, Matt Millen did indeed draft Calvin Johnson. Nine-Wide, here they come!

Poor, poor Detroit fans. What must it be like knowing your team is doomed to futility?

Jason, you got your puppy kicking moment if you saw the shot of Brady Quinn after Miami picked Ted Ginn.

the fans in Ford Field actually CHEERED the pick… it’s like a mass Stockholm Syndrome there now or something…

Hmm, Cleveland appears to have outsmarted everyone…

heh I missed the puppy kicking moment! I got back into teh apartment a pick or two after that.

I gotta give Cleveland major, major props for what they’ve pulled out in the first round. they got 2 of the top 5-10 players in the draft. On top of that they got a good young QB and a young stud o-lineman to help protect him.

The fact that Lions fans are cheering that pick seriously disturbs me. it could be that the Lions have been bad for so long that Lions fans no longer understand football.

And dear Miami: Ted Ginn? TED GINN? At that pick? I don’t get it.

CJ and I are now musing about the very real possibility that Detroit could take another WR with the 34th pick…

There has been a trade: The City Of Detroit has traded the Lions to Amsterdam, The Netherlands in exchange for the Amsterdam Admirals of NFL Europa and a year’s supply of the finest cheeba.

Miami and Detroit are inexplicable to me. This is a good draft for WRs, but they just aren’t impact players by themselves. You sort of have to have someone who can throw the ball to them, and an offensive line to protect that guy.

“This is a good draft for WRs, but they just aren’t impact players by themselves.”

Just wait for the Lions’ revolutionary Nine-Wide offense. You’ll be changing your tune. heh

So, the Colts could have drafted either of two of the best linebackers in the draft, a position we badly need filled… Two guys that I was sure wouldn’t be there where we picked… And we draft a wide receiver. Thanks.

Let’s see the Colts could have had

*one of two possible stud linebackers
*a really solid DT that not many expected to fall this far
*a solid corner (a position where BOTH starters from last year are gone from the team)
*… or a slowish slot receiver with good hands.

yes, Polian. draft the WR. Because that’s obviously our biggest need. Not LB where we’ve been weak all year. not CB where we’ve lost two starters. Not DT where we’ve lost depth due to injury and free agency.

What the hell is Polian thinking? I know he’s got a GREAT draft record but this is just… dumb.

I think it’s going to work out fine. the first two defenders they selected (with their 3rd and 4th picks) are actually pretty darn good players… one was the Pac-10 defensive player of the year (and a ball-hawking DB who pulled down 8 interceptions in his senior season), and the other was the defensive Co-Captain at Ohio State, not an insignificant feat.

Clint Sessions, their 5th pick, was the Pitt team captain who had more than 100 tackles as a linebacker in his senior year (12 for loss, with five forced fumbles). I don’t know about Michael Coe or Brannon Condren, but I’m guessing they are of a similar pedigree…

so, while I was initially upset they didn’t draft one of those two LBs that were available at 32, but I think they have more than made up for it in the late rounds…

only time will tell how well they did, though.

Yeah I’m not QUITE as pissed as I was on Saturday. I still think that the team’s needs at LB and DT were more pressing than a need for a third WR and that the quality drop from end of first round to where they started getting defenders was too great.

But now that I’ve calmed down I suppose I should trust Polian given his track record.

I’m also skeptical about the Gonzalez pick, but it’s the Colts do need a solid #3 receiver. The passing game suffered from a lack of Stokley last year.

More importantly, Polian’s philosophy in recent years has been to use middle-round picks to draft unhyped defensive players who fit Dungy’s system, instead of burning a first round pick and a big signing bonus on some hotshot prospect from the Combine. I can’t really argue with the results.

As far as the Colts are concerned, I actually like the Gonzalez pick, and love the third-round pick of Dameiyon Hughes.

I’m scratching my head over Tony Ugoh in the second round a little bit. He played tackle in college but isn’t considered an NFL tackle prospect… maybe they think he can be an upgrade at one of the guard spots.

As for Ugoh apparently the Colts love him and think he can be one of those rotating O-Linemen that the Colts love to use. Seems like a big price to pay for that…. but eh… Howard Mudd could turn ME into a serviceable O-Lineman so he can probably do wonders with Ugoh
